About Lily Hill
You begin in an office corridor where the carpet hasn’t dried. Further on there’s an empty swimming pool, and a launderette that’s always open.
Lily Hill shows you each place twice, side by side. The second picture is a memory of the first, and the memory is wrong in three places. Nothing marks them, and most are small. Click where the pictures differ, on either side. What you find the first time is not the whole of Lily Hill.
Someone has been through all of these places before you. Lily Hill is their story, and it comes in pieces. They learned to swim in that pool, the handwriting on the classroom board is theirs, and they were supposed to be on the last train. Now each memory is a little wrong, and the story of what happened to them comes together one place at a time.
The game
- Ten places. All made by hand, and all a little too familiar.
- 120 differences in all, 12 in every place
- 20 of them are sounds: you hear them rather than see them
- easter eggs hidden along the way
- Drawn like 2001. It looks like an early 2000s console game, with film grain, murky blacks and a rough dither. The places are 3D, the lights flicker, and the view sways a little when you move the mouse.
- Medium to hard. Expect to look for a while. The differences are small and easy to miss. The grain falls the same on both pictures, so noise never passes for a difference.
- Sound. Each place has its own quiet room tone. You stop noticing it. The place does not. Headphones help.
- Hints. After 90 seconds a hint is offered. It rings the area, not the exact spot.
Lily Hill is unsettling and a little creepy, but quietly. There is nothing to fight and nothing to run from. Some sounds are meant to startle.
